Professional copyediting, indexing, eBook conversion, and interior book design (formatting/layout)
Liz Richards is an editor, indexer, interior book designer, and eBook specialist who is passionate about helping others publish works that edify the body of Christ and glorify God.
She enjoys assisting and encouraging pastors and other Christian authors (novice and experienced, self-publishing or not) in their publishing efforts.
Liz has a commitment to honor God with her talents and her time, and that’s why she’d love to work with you on your next project.
Liz copyedits nonfiction and fiction manuscripts, Bible studies and devotionals, journal and magazine articles, op-eds, online articles, websites and blogs, and author proposals.
Sometimes called substantive or developmental editing, Liz will collaborate with you to make significant changes as necessary to your manuscript, such as rewriting and reorganizing the text for clarity and flow, while preserving your voice.
No, a computer can’t do it. Back-of-the-book indexing, where the text of the entire book as well as substantive content in notes is indexed, is both art and science, and is one of Liz’s favorite services.
Interior book design
Also called typesetting, formatting, or layout, Liz uses Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Word to create a beautiful print-ready copy of your manuscript in the appropriate file format.
Liz will generate a fixed layout or reflowable format (ePub, Mobi), depending on your project, for publication to Amazon Kindle, Apple iBooks, Smashwords, Kobo, B&N NOOK, Google Play, and others.
Fact-checking and source documentation
Part of Liz’s expertise is in formatting footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographies according to The Chicago Manual of Style. She also offers fact-checking and verifying of Bible verses as a stand-alone service.
Journal/Magazine and Online Articles
Liz regularly edits journal and magazine articles, both print and online, for several authors. She also works with pastors to turn their weekly sermons into blog articles. Some of Liz’s latest projects include Curt Daniel’s “Sola Scriptura” in Tabletalk magazine (Feb 2020) and “Jonathan Edwards on the Love of God” in The Banner of Truth (July 2019); Lee Dodd’s Habakkuk series on LeeDodd.com; and Shane Idleman’s frequent articles on Stream.org and The Christian Post online.
“We were delighted with our decision to rely on Liz Richards’ expertise to lay out the manuscript for our self-published book. Our 140,000-word book was complex with 23 chapters, bullet points, indented quotes, callouts, illustrations, endnotes, bibliography, and index.
Liz was a joy to work with. She was always responsive and adaptive to our need to make last minute changes in the text.
The final product is 5 star all the way.
Liz Richards, thank you so much for being there for us! We couldn’t have done it without you!”
—Elizabeth Carman, author
“Liz did very professional work—fast and accurate—and showed good communication, creativity and problem-solving skills required for an out of the ordinary project. Would definitely work with Liz on any new projects I might have in the future.”

“I am VERY happy to let you know that I found ZERO mistakes. . . . I will give you a FANTASTIC grade of A+++ on the work! I am actually stunned with how good the quality is and how speedy you turned it around. . . . I love how you take great care with God’s Word. . . . You were able to discern [what the pastor] was doing [in the] middle of the passage exposition of the text. . . . I just wanted you to know how much I am impressed with your work!!”
“Liz is efficient, timely, and dependable in her work, and is easy to work with, without any fussy requirements. Her desire to serve the Lord through getting the preached Word out in written form is a blessing to the people of God. I highly commend Liz Richards to you.”
—Rev. Ryan Davidson
“I’ve used BE twice for editing services, and have been pleased both times with its professionalism and quality of their editors. It is one thing to write a book from the author’s perspective; it is another thing to have a reader understand and enjoy it from their perspective. Liz does an excellent job in making your manuscript better from a reader’s view, which of course having a reader want to read your book is the most important part of writing.”
“Liz Richards is an excellent editor and proofreader who consistently meets every deadline promised. She also communicates clearly and quickly. Doing business with her is a pleasure.”
“God most definitely led me to Liz in my seeking direction for completing my book. I am most thankful for that. Not only is she fast, very accurate, but she is also a wonderful encourager. The book I wrote was my very first. I knew absolutely nothing about how it should flow, what it should look like, what would capture a reader. But she did and does. I hope to write more in my future. Without a doubt, Inksmith Editing will be my choice to make the work more meaningful. Beyond being a professional, Liz is first a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and the most attractive quality. Thanks, Liz—I’ve grown to love you dearly.”
“Thanks for your great index for [the] book! I am impressed. . . . I appreciate your prompt and thorough work so very much. Now I know where to send my clients who require indexers!”
“The assistance Liz provided me was invaluable in the production of my first book. As a novice and lacking any knowledge of the process, she directed me into making the right connections and decisions. Although Liz and I live in different countries, any additional cost, to me, was inconsequential. I wanted to work with a Christian and I believe that the Lord led me to her.”
“Liz Richards has done an excellent job in helping me prepare several manuscripts for books and articles for publication. She has been very knowledgeable and helpful, has caught many of my errors, and has made many useful suggestions. She is experienced in her field, and I intend to use her services in the future. I heartily recommend her to others.”

“Bringing a manuscript to Liz is like going to a good dentist. She scrapes off the crud, fills in the holes, and straightens things up. The process can be painful at times, but in the end you’re glad you went. I brought my book to Liz with the assumption that it just needed to be polished, but it became clear through several revisions that certain concepts required elucidation and some sections needed expansion. To say that it came out of the process a different book might be to overstate things, but not by much. I would highly recommend Liz’s editorial services to anyone looking to make their writing shine, and especially to Christian authors/publishers seeking thoughtful, informed criticism.”
—John Morganti, Author
“Liz’s quality of work is fantastic, she’s both professional and approachable at the same time, and I have really enjoyed working with her. It is clear from her work and her responsiveness that she really cares about the content and quality of my projects. I can throw any project at her and have confidence it is in good hands. Liz is a fantastic resource, and the ultimate secret weapon for any Christian author. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for an excellent editor.”

“Liz did an excellent job proofing my book, and it is a pleasure working with her. As a result, my book reads cleaner and smoother. I hope to partner with Liz again in the future!”
—Jed Jurchenko, Author
“Fast and accurate do not typically go together, but Liz Richards remarkably pulls these two wonderful things together with something even more amazing—affordability. Some editors take weeks, if not months, to turn a project around, but not Liz. She is lightning fast. The speed in which she does her work would scare me if she was not so precise. She is a skilled editor. It is more than just a knowledge of the rules of grammar, it’s a gift. Along with her speed and accuracy, what keeps me coming back to Liz is her prices. How she does it, I don’t know, but I am thankful to have found Liz’s services for myself, and I am happy to recommend her to everyone.”

“I would strongly recommend Liz Smith to anyone in need of publishing assistance. Her help and guidance were invaluable to me, especially in the copy editing and design of the book.”
“I reached out to Liz for help with editing my manuscript. I had worked with other professionals and many of them didn’t have the experience of e-book formatting work as well as editing services. Liz handled all these things very well for me and worked closely with me on a regular basis. I was very satisfied with the work and communication.”
“Liz Smith has done a magnificent editing job. She is detailed and very proficient and offers great suggestions with regards to any changes. I couldn’t recommend her more highly. As a first time author, I felt very safe especially as all communication was prompt and clear. I would most certainly use Liz’s service again.”
