Christa Michel has edited over 150 books in the romance, YA, middle grade, and women’s fiction genre, many of which have garnered industry awards or hit the NYT and USA Today bestseller lists. She has worked with smaller publishing houses as well as large NY publishers including St. Martin’s Press, Macmillan Children’s Books, Tor Teen, Kensington, and Sourcebooks. She is also an award-winning multi-published YA author.
Her editor philosophy is to create a partnership with authors so that she can guide them into perfecting the stories they want to tell. She approaches stories with grace, honesty, compassion, humor, and integrity, keeping in mind what the author is promising to the reader with their book and how to help them fulfill that promise. She’s also a stickler for details and has a very careful eye when it comes to copyediting and proofreading.
Christa passed the proofreading test to join the Book Editing Associates network and may offer proofreading services to her BEA clients.
With almost ten years of professional book-editing experience, Christa Michel has found her niche in partnering with authors to create excellent books and cultivate new readers. Her editorial experience began with Entangled Publishing’s YA and romance lines, where she also learned about publicity and marketing and finance and royalties.
At Samhain Publishing she acquired and developed three-to-four books per month for their main romance line. She had approximately forty authors (agented and unagented) in her stable, several of whom were award-winning and bestselling.
After Samhain closed, Christa turned to full-time freelance editing, working with NY publishers, smaller independent publishers, and self-published authors. Her skills branched out from development editing to copyediting and proofreading, and several of her titles hit the NYT and USA Today bestseller list.
Christa has been lucky enough to acquire experience in many areas of the publishing industry (including being a part-time independent bookseller), which has helped hone her knowledge as an editor and experienced publishing mentor, and made her an excellent resource for authors.
In her free time, she has done everything from play roller derby to give a TEDx Talk about how parents can talk to their kids about sexuality and consent.

“I’m one very lucky writer to call Christa my editor. Working with Christa on my debut novel really was a pleasure. She crawled into the minds of my characters and helped me find their true voices. She pointed out redundancies in my writing and helped me to sharpen my dialogue and grammar. And Christa did all this while being brutally honest (thank goodness!) and entirely optimistic and upbeat (thank goodness!).”

She helped me to go deeper with my characters and to make sure the story I wanted to tell was the one coming across on the page. With her assistance, I was also able to add that last layer of professional polish before my book went out into the world. I can’t recommend her highly enough and hope to work with her for many years to come.”
