Book Editing Associates - Fiction and Nonfiction - Book Editors Network

Services Offered

The editors listed with Book Editing Associates can provide you with a competent and professional second set of eyes. It is a proven fact that it's impossible to proof your own work; you tend to overlook mistakes of all sizes. Your mind subconsciously fills in what it thinks should be there and your conscious appraisal is none the wiser. But you can be sure that an agent or acquisitions editor will be aware of your oversights. Because editing is actually part of the writing process, you absolutely cannot let your manuscript leave your possession without this important step.

Besides a detailed copy edit, we can assist with story and character development by offering suggestions for improvement or actually assisting with rewrites.

Whatever level of service you contract, you will receive two files: one color-coded using Word's tracking feature, and the other "clean," with all changes incorporated. This allows you to view all editorial changes.

We focus on the following critical areas, as needed:

  Fiction:

  • Plot Structuring
  • Setting the Hook
  • Building Suspense
  • Story Development
  • Point of View
  • The Scene/Setting
  • Character Development
  • Action and Pacing
  • Tone / Voice
  • Authentic Dialogue
  • Style Consistency
  • Readability
  • Climax / Story Resolution

 Non-fiction:

  • Organization
  • Development
  • Message Effectiveness
  • Fact-Checking
  • Persona
  • Focus
  • Voice
  • Targeting Your Audience
  • Indexing
  • Marketability

Nothing But The Truth
After you submit your sample, one or more of our editors will realistically assess your writing. Whether you need only proofreading, a light copy edit, a heavier developmental edit, or could benefit from formal writing instruction—or various options in between—you'll hear it kindly and upfront. You'll also be quoted a fair, flat fee for the service(s) we recommend.

No Pressure—Ever!
The choice of service is ultimately yours. We won't pressure you into a higher level of service than you need or desire. In fact, we'll give you a choice at every turn—including a choice of editors. At every step, you'll be able to work with someone whose expertise and temperament matches your needs.

Notes:

No hidden charges
We won't quote you one price and charge you another. When possible, we'll provide you with a per-word or per-page rate so you'll know up front exactly how much your project will cost. (Of course, we ask that you fairly represent the scope of your project.)

To learn more about the rates charged by professional editors, please see: Editorial Freelancers Association

It is a mistaken notion that freelance editors work "on spec" (speculation) with no payment to the editor. It is basically asking the editor to work for free. There's no guarantee that a book will see a profit (or even be published). The editors posted here do not work on spec.
