Writing a romance novel?
The story centers on the emotional conflicts between two people who become romantically involved; any other plot or external conflict is secondary. A romance is a human story of connection showcasing one of our most basic needs—the need for companionship.
Far from the “bodice-rippers” of the past, the romance genre now features people with careers, independent natures, and life goals they must rearrange to allow this great love into their lives. Readers will find a story they connect with and people they understand while exploring the bloom of new love, or the rekindling of a love gone sour.
The romance genre has the widest variety of all genres, and is the highest-selling genre of fiction. All other genres can be found within the blanket of romance—mystery, suspense, science fiction, fantasy, horror (gothic and modern), history (recent and ancient past as well as Regency and Scottish Highlands), Christian or spiritual, and every age group from YA to New Adult to Adult—and explicitness levels from light flirting and kisses to the edge of erotica. Editors may be generalists across the romance and women’s fiction spectrum, or may specialize in certain subgenre categories.
An experienced romance novel editor will be able to show you whether your emotional conflict keeps the lovers apart to the end, or if you’ve allowed them to unite prematurely, relying on external conflict to finish out the plot. Romance editors have seen it all—an author needn’t worry about the presentation of love scenes. Experienced romance book editors can analyze the presentation of human courtship and help you see where it follows natural patterns (believable) or where it goes out of order (not believable) so your reader falls in love alongside your characters.
